Spies at wartime; a post-war BBC radio setting; multiple timelines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Juliet has been plucked from an administrative government\njob to help run a monitoring operation out of a London flat. The flat next door\nhas been wired with microphones to record a government agent whose job it is to\ngather up Nazi sympathisers and persuade them that he\u2019s actually a Nazi spy\nhimself. Juliet\u2019s job is to transcribe the recordings of these conversations.\nBut as time goes on, her role expands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with any good spy story, there\u2019s distrust at the heart of\nit, and we\u2019re never quite sure who is truly to be believed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second timeline follows Juliet in her post-war role,\nworking in children\u2019s radio for the BBC, where she seems to be coasting to a\ncertain extent. When she meets one of her former colleagues in the street but\nis ignored by him, it sets off a chain of events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I really enjoyed this intricate story that felt very real,\ndealing with those whose views would have been considered traitorous. Atkinson\nhas clearly done her homework \u2013 much of the information about secret recordings\nwas based on accounts of the secret listeners in Trent Park in North London,\nwhere German officers were held as prisoners of war in very relaxed confines.\nUnbeknownst to them, the British has wired the place up with microphones to\ngather intelligence from loose-lipped German officers speaking amongst\nthemselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Atkinson has a new Jackson Brodie book that has just come out in paperback \u2013 so I\u2019ll be getting onto that soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/adambowie\/5620323306\/in\/photostream\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5021\/5620323306_cc7fdc0d1a.jpg\" alt=\"Trent Park-5\" width=\"493\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another title that has been kicking around in my home for a while, but which has all the ingredients for me to really enjoy.
