{"id":8407,"date":"2019-03-21T11:54:50","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T11:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.adambowie.com\/?p=8407"},"modified":"2019-04-06T14:05:53","modified_gmt":"2019-04-06T13:05:53","slug":"the-legacy-by-yrsa-sigurdardottir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.adambowie.com\/blog\/2019\/03\/the-legacy-by-yrsa-sigurdardottir\/","title":{"rendered":"The Legacy by Yrsa Sigur\u00f0ard\u00f3ttir"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Having recently read and enjoyed <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.adambowie.com\/2019\/03\/the-absolution-by-yrsa-sigurdardottir\/\">The Absolution<\/a>, the third in the &#8216;Freyja and Huldur&#8217; series, I returned to the first book &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.co.uk\/Legacy-Freyja-Huldar-Yrsa-Sigurdardottir\/dp\/1473621550\">The Legacy<\/a> &#8211; in my ongoing Icelandic crime fiction reading marathon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A prologue begins with three children being split up by social services &#8211; something that will clearly have ramifications later. And indeed, when we move forward to current-day Reykjavik, a woman named Elisa suffers a particularly grisly fate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huldur is sent to investigate along with members of his team. Finding a motive for the crime seems to be key, but there doesn&#8217;t appear to be one. There is a witness in Elisa&#8217;s daughter, Margr\u00e9t &#8211; but the child is understandably traumatised. So the police need to work with &#8216;Children&#8217;s House&#8217; where we meet Freyja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iceland is a small place, and it&#8217;s particularly unfortunate that Huldar and Freyja had a one night stand that ended with Huldur running away in the morning. Things are going to be a little frosty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One key component of this tautly told tale is a shortwave <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Numbers_station\">numbers station<\/a>, which unusually is broadcasting in Icelandic. What could it mean?
