{"id":426,"date":"2003-09-10T14:45:46","date_gmt":"2003-09-10T14:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.adambowie.com\/2003\/09\/demonstrators_a\/"},"modified":"2003-09-10T14:45:46","modified_gmt":"2003-09-10T14:45:46","slug":"demonstrators_a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.adambowie.com\/blog\/2003\/09\/demonstrators_a\/","title":{"rendered":"Demonstrators Arrested Under Anti-Terrorism Laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well it seems that the police have been <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/england\/london\/3093412.stm\">arresting<\/a> demonstrators at the ExCel centre which is hosting DSEi &#8211; Defence Systems &#038; Equipment International. Strangely the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.excel-london.co.uk\">ExCel website<\/a> doesn&#8217;t seem to mention it, but of course, being Europe&#8217;s largest exhibition of this nature it does have it&#8217;s own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsei.co.uk\">site<\/a> (this should not be mistaken for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsei.org\/\">this<\/a> very similarly named website!).<br \/>\nAs I&#8217;m not a member of the &#8220;bona fide defence and aeronautical press&#8221; I probably wouldn&#8217;t get it, although I could try as a member of the broadcast media.<br \/>\nObviously demonstrating outside a commercial trade fair is tantamount to planning the next major terrorist act, and anyone who does anything of this sort should be instantly locked away.<br \/>\nWell that&#8217;s what David Blunkett must think, since he had to authorise this use of the Act.<br \/>\nPolice State? Surely not. 79 arrests so far.<br \/>\nUPDATE: It seems that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/england\/london\/3097150.stm\">now<\/a> Blunkett&#8217;s had something of a change of heart, or maybe he&#8217;s only just found out about something he should have had to authorise (surely it wasn&#8217;t just rubber-stamped by someone in the Home Office?). He wants to know why Counter-Terrorism laws were invoked rather than public order ones. Good question.
