{"id":20675,"date":"2021-12-25T16:12:39","date_gmt":"2021-12-25T16:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.adambowie.com\/?p=20675"},"modified":"2021-12-25T16:12:41","modified_gmt":"2021-12-25T16:12:41","slug":"the-second-cut-by-louise-welsh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.adambowie.com\/blog\/2021\/12\/the-second-cut-by-louise-welsh\/","title":{"rendered":"The Second Cut by Louise Welsh"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In <em>The Second Cut<\/em> we revisit the world of Rilke, who readers first came across in Louise Welsh\u2019s fantastic debut <em>The Cutting Room.<\/em> Rilke works for Bowery Auctions, and he\u2019s given a tip by a friend, Jojo, that there\u2019s a house clearance sale coming up that his firm might want to get involved with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rilk de jumps on the opportunity, but then Jojo dies in circumstances that Rilke finds a little unlikely. Yes, his sort-of friend liked to party a bit too hard, but being found dead in a Glasgow alley doesn\u2019t seem quite right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, there\u2019s a bit of a question mark being raised over the house clearance. Is Rilke really to believe the family members who are selling the contents of the property to support the elderly relative in her retirement in Thailand? Or is something else going on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slowly Rilke gets dragged into a seedy side of Glaswegian gangland criminals even as&nbsp; he finds himself just trying to help people out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group of characters we meet are colourful and believable, almost as much as Rilke\u2019s personal lifestyle \u2013 full of casual sex and dating apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having also recently read Denise Mina\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.adambowie.com\/2021\/08\/recently-read-crime-fiction\/\">The Less Dead<\/a>, there is a through line into the heart of dark underworld of Glasgow in Welsh\u2019s fine new novel. I was fully captivated by these characters, and you never know where things are headed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is worth noting that you don\u2019t need to have read <em>The Cutting Room<\/em> to enjoy this new book. But if you haven\u2019t, you probably should go back and read it, just because it\u2019s really good book!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.co.uk\/Second-Cut-Louise-Welsh\/dp\/1838850864\">The Second Cut is published in hardback on January 27 2022<\/a>.
